To Melissa on Her Birthday
You were raped by your daddy
When you were three and four
While your momma hid her face
Just pretending not to know.
But you told the right people
They all helped to make you safe
Then you helped save your sister too.
You were very strong and brave.
You lost your home and your family
It cost you everything you ever knew
So you became a good survivor
Your fighting instincts kept you whole
You could have been shattered
You should have been destroyed
Your resilience keeps you on your feet
You’ve got such a stubborn streak.
But when you cry for your losses
You let me kiss your tears away.
Then I wrap you in my arms
I want to keep you safe and sound.
I see you strong, tall, and healthy
Then I look at your two little hands,
They are so small and very delicate
I am shocked by their tiny size.
I realize what a child you really are.
I see you laughing when you play.
I love you with all my heart and soul
You mean so much to me.
And you are strong and very brave
You are taking life as it comes
Happy birthday Sweet Melissa,
You turned five years old today.
